Analysing an advert-
Arctic monkeys- Whatever people say I am album poster
Image-
· The image is of a man smoking. The image is effective because, it demonstrates the indie cultural.- the freedom that someone gets when they smoke a cigarette could be seen as being similar to the freedom someone feels when they listen to a certain type of music.
· The fact that the man is wearing a white shirt, connotes a sense of purity, which acts as a contradiction. Smoking isn’t pure, therefore the fact that this two completely different things appear on the poster, suggests that the band may portray two completely different sides of their personality on the album.
· The man is looking directly at the camera, which immediately helps to create a relationship between the audience and the band.
· The man’s eyes look almost as though he is squinting; therefore, this is effective, because it makes it harder for the audience to see all of his features. This could reflect the bands idea of not wanting to give too much away by just the album poster.
Copy-
· The font on the poster is quite quirky in the sense of the shape of the letters.
· The font is black and on a white background, which reflects the seriousness of the album overshadowing the fun side.
Genre-
· In some ways, the image helps to connote the genre to the audience. The simplicity of the image shows that the band may not feel as though other aspects are needed in order to make an effective poster.
Mode of address-
· The fact that the man is staring at the camera, makes the audience feel involved with what is happening on the poster. It causes it to seem more personal.
Title-
· The title of the album isn’t on the poster, only the bands name is.
· This creates an enigma for the audience, because they are leaved with the question what is the album called, and why the name isn’t on the poster.
Representation-
· Gender is represented in the usual domineering way- the fact that only a man is on the poster, suggest that they are more powerful, therefore the power could be elevated in the band’s music.
· The man is white, which is reinforcing the dominant ideology of the indie rock genre.
