Analysing a CD cover-
Two door cinema club- Tourist history
Image-
- A cat with glittering eyes connotes a sense of difference and originality in regards to what the band is going to bring to the music industry.
- The colours surrounding the cat are dark and as the colour gets closer to the cat, the light gets brighter, almost in an angelic way. The dark aspect connotes a sense of mystery for the audience about the album.
- The cat is wearing a crown on its head, which could connote a sense of power, which could reflect the feelings of the band about the music that is on the album.
- The cat is in the centre of the frame and there is a close up of, even though you can see the whole of the cats body.
Copy-
- On this particular version of the album, there is no text on the cover. This could show that the band may not feel as though these aspects are necessary- showing that in regards to their music, they may only create songs that are simple but have a powerful message to them.
Genre-
- The indie genre is some ways is elevated through the image used on the cover. The quirkiness of the cover helps to show a fun and youthful side of the band, therefore suggesting that the genre maybe one that has these elements in it.
Target audience-
- The target audience isn’t easily recognised, however, due to the image used, this does suggest a sense of youthfulness, therefore the target audience maybe young adults/teens.
Mood/tone-
- The mood created is quite mysterious, the audience are leaved wondering why certain things have been used or haven’t. They are also able to make their own minds up about the album.
Title/name-
- The title of the album-“tourist history” connotes a sense of journey which could be elevated through the songs on the album.
- Also, the word tourist helps to elevate the idea of youth.
Representation-
- Neither class, gender nor ethnicity is really represented on the CD cover, but a sense of youth is definitely present.
- However, the fact that the cat looks well groomed and has a crown on its head, could suggest that the band maybe of an upper class.
Other-
The Cats eyes are a dominant theme throughout the rest of the album artwork, for example: the text on the back on the CD, certain letters such as: O’s and C’s are shaped like cats eyes, which helps keep the theme present.
- Also, the text on the actual CD is designed like a Cheshire cat smile- this is effective for a number of reasons for example: the smiling cat is immediately recognised ad it s quirky nature may cause the audience to smile.
