Analysing a music video-
Mumford and sons- the cave
Image-
· The majority of the camera shots used in the video are mid shots and close-ups of each of the band members. This helps the audience feel closer to the band, which helps create a relationship between the band and the audience.
· There is a long shot at the beginning of the video when the band are coming towards the camera on the motorbikes, this helps to show the audience the full image, as well as create an enigma because it cause them to question what the video is going to be about.
· The band members are usually postponed in the centre of the frame, which helps show their importance.
· The natural light used in the video, reflects the natural element of the song and the band. – It also helps create a sense of realism in regards to the videos, which could cause the audience to feel more connected to it.
· The fact that 3 of the members of the band are wearing white suits, connotes a sense of purity and innocence, but the fact the other member is wearing a black suit could connote that there is some difference between the members of the band. – It could also reflect the fact that the music that the band has created is both joyful and innocent, as well as having serious elements to it.
· The Asian men in the video are wearing blue suits that all the same, which reflects the similarity of the men and the difference between them and the members of the band.
· The props used such as: the bands bikes and instruments help to add to the feel of country rock and freedom.
Editing-
- There is a sense of continuity throughout the video, which helps the realism of the video and how believable the audience find it. – this need of realism could reflect the genre being a genre that prides itself in creating music that is real and doesn’t need any extras.
- The scenes with the band members have been edited with the scenes of the Asian men. For example: when the band are on the bikes singing, there are jump cuts of the asian men lip-syncing, this is effective because instead of the audience just seeing the band sing the song, they also get to see someone singing it who more than likely wouldn’t usually sing a song from this genre.
Genre-
- The genre of the band’s music is elevated by the natural elements of the videos, for example: the lighting used and the props used all connote a sense of nature and a journey, which are things that are usually sense in the country folk genre.
Target audience-
- Similarly to the album’s CD cover the target audience isn’t really elevated throughout the video, but the freedom feel and the sense of journey could suggest that the video is targeted at young adults.
Mode of address-
- Moods created- joyful, fulfilling, a sense of a journey etc.- these all make the audience feel involved within the video, which helps increase the audiences enjoyment of the video.
Narrative-
- There isn’t really a narrative structure within the video, but there is defiantly a sense of a journey that the band members are on.
Representation-
- Class and ethnicity are both represented by the difference in what the band members and the Asian men are wearing. For example: the majority of the band is wearing a white suit which connotes a sense of purity, but the Asian characters are wearing blue, which could connote a sense of difference and also nature. The fact that the band decide to wear something different, could show that they could feel as though they are different compared to the Asian characters.
Other-
- An enigma is created because the audience don’t know where the band are going, also they aren’t aware of the relationship between the band members and the characters- if there is one.
