Analysing a music video- Shape of my heart

Analysing a music video-

Noah and the whale- shape of my heart

Image-
  • The fact that all of the band members are all wearing dark colours connotes a sense of mystery.
  • There are various different props used depending on the surroundings of the scene.- this is effective because, it helps the audience to feel as though the video is real.
  • All of the band members at certain scenes of the video are wearing black overalls with light blue shirts peeping through.- the fact that all of the band are wearing the same thing shows a sense of equality within the band, that maybe represented through their music.
  • But the audience can only see the collar of the lead singer’s shirt. The fact that we only see that could suggest that yes, there is equality, but because he is the lead singer, there is some difference in him. Also, it could show that he may be more reserved than the other members of the band.
  • For the majority of the video, the bands facial expressions are quite normal, in the sense that they aren’t really showing any emotion other than concentration. The fact that the band look as though they are concentrating, shows their commitment to their music and their fans.
  • The lighting in the video is mainly natural until “the lab” scene.
  • As a band, the majority of the shots are long shots which allow the audience to see the whole picture- which helps the audience create a relationship with the band.

Editing-
  • The majority of the edits throughout the video are zoom outs and scene transitions.
  • One of the most effect zoom outs is the “kite recording” where the camera shows a mid shot of the kite, then a close up, then the action starts when the camera zooms out. This is effective because, it allows the audience to see from different distances; also it adds a different dimension to the video.
  • The pacing of the video is quite natural, except from the zooms. The fact that it is quite real makes it easier to believe.

Genre-
  • The genre is quite present in the video for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is the quirkiness of the video. The indie genre is known for being quite quirky- the band really emphasise this in the fact that each scene is named and the video is set as a video within a video.

Target audience-
  • The target audience is again made quite clear- young adults who enjoy quirky and fun music videos.

Mode of address-
  • The tone is very light and fun, which is effective because, it reflects the genre of the music video.
Representation-
  • The ways in which gender has been represented, shows males in an almost countertype way. The fact that the band appear to be having fun whilst they are shooting their “video” shows that men aren’t just hard and manly, it shows that they are aware of how to have fun and created a joyful atmosphere for their audience at the same time.
