Analysing a CD cover- Dirty Projectors

Analysing a CD cover-
Dirty projectors- Bitte orca
Image-
·         There are 2 women on the cover the large circles connecting them. This could show that they are connected through their music. Also, the fact that there are women on the cover challenges the dominant ideology of the indie/ experimental rock genre, which is usually dominated by white, males.
·         The women are both wearing white tops, which connote a sense of purity, but one of them is wearing top with blue thread lines on it, this could be the difference between them as members of the band. For example: the difference in design could connote a difference in role.
·         The different coloured paint splodges on either side of the cover behind the women, is effective, because, it brings attention to the women’s faces.
·         It is also effective because, the splodges are connected; therefore, this connotes a connection between the band through their music.
·         The lighting of the image is bright but not over powerful, which is helpful, because, it helps the audience see the image clearer, but in a natural way.
Copy-
·         The font is quite simple, which is helpful in some ways, because it doesn’t detract the audience’s attention away from the image. But in some ways, the font could be larger, because, some people may find it hard to read.
Genre-
·         Certain elements of the cover challenge the genre of the album in different ways. For example: the fact that there are no signs of men on the cover for a band that has both male and female members.
Secondary level of communication-
·         The fact that neither of the women on the cover are facing the camera, suggests a sense of mystery in regards to the music they create.
Target audience-
·         The target audience isn’t really elevated, but the simplicity of the cover suggests that the target audience could be young to middle aged auidnece who appreciate simplicity.
Title/name-
·         Bitte orca- means “please killer whale”. The fact that an English speaking American band have decided to name the album a foreign name, could suggest that they enjoy going against the norms and being original.
 Representation-
·         The female gender in the album is the more dominant gender due to the fact that the album is centred on two female members of the band. The fact the band have done this is very positive in regards to the role of women in this particular music genre.- a genre which is usually dominated by white, males.
·         Class isn’t really dominant in the album cover. The fact that the females on the cover are white reinforces the dominant ideology of the genre.
Other-
·         An enigma is created by the fact that neither of the women are looking at the camera, immediately causes the audience to question the reasons behind why they chose to do this.
·         Also they may also question the significance of the colours of the paint splodges- red and blue.- this immediately makes me refer back to the American flag (red, white and blue) and the fact that they are an American band shows that they used the colours of their country’s flag, shows that they take being American being very serious and want to make their audience aware of it.
