Analysing a music video- Something good can work

Analysing a music video-
Two door cinema club- something good can work
Image-
·           The band is wearing everyday clothes that help to create a sense of realism between the band and the audience.
·           Also, certain members of the band are wearing sunglasses, which create a sense of mystery between the audience and the band, which cause them to be inquisitive and watch the video to find out why they are wearing them.
·           Close-ups of the lead singers face are used, which help to emphasise his importance in the band, also it helps the audience create a relationship with the song, because, they know who is singing it.
·           The lighting used throughout the video changes depending on the setting. For example:
·           When the band is in the arcade, the lighting is dark with coloured lights surrounding them. This shows that the light almost reflects the mood of the band at that stage of the video.
·           The fact that the majority of the lighting in the video is natural shows that the bands approach their music in a natural way.
·           The band are usually positioned in the centre of the frame, this connotes a sense of importance and helps to create identity awareness.
·           The majority of the props used are the bands instruments; this shows that the band may feel that they don’t feel the need for all the extra aspects that other artists include in their videos.
·           The bands facial expressions are often quite dull, but during the night scene, their faces show a joyful side to them- this could reflect their music style. It also reinforces the stereotypical reaction to young adults when they go out- their enjoyment and the fun they have almost over takes other ideas of them.
Editing-
·      There a variety of effective edits in the video, for example: in one of the scenes the action fades into another scene, which has completely different surroundings compared to the previous one. This effective because, it moves in a similar way to the music, therefore causing the audience not to be distracted from the music too much.
·      Also, a swirl is used as a scene transition which is effective because, it reflects the colours which are used in the video. It is also effective because it helps to create a fun atmosphere for the audience- this could suggest the target audience for the video are youthful people. This could also be shown by the way the fact that the band looks youthful, therefore, this helps to create a relationship between the band and the audience.
Genre-
·         There is a sense of freedom that connotes a sense of indie. The band are young and don’t seem to be under the influence or control of adults, therefore the indie theme is elevated.
Target audience-
·         In some ways, the target audience is shown by the youthfulness of the band, therefore, creating a connection between the audience and the band.
Mode of address-
·         The two different scenes -night and day, help create two different moods for the audience. The day scene creates a sense of journey and the night scene is almost the destination of the previous scene.
Narrative-
·         The narrative structure isn’t very dominant due to the number of characters the video. There is a sense of leadership through the lead singer being positioned in the centre of the frame for the majority of the video.
Representation-
·         The video is male orientated, which reinforces the dominant ideology of the genre.
·         White, males- dominate the video, which also reinforces the idea of this being the norm.
·         There don’t seem to be any adults in the video, therefore emphasising the freedom of the band.
